All-Breed Dog Obedience and Disposition Testing

We recognize that not every breed is recognized by the big registries. Some registries do provide an alternate registration opportunity to “mixed breeds” or “working dogs,” but require the dog to be altered (spayed or neutered). We are small and independent and have the freedom to do things differently.

To that end, we’ve developed our own canine obedience and disposition testing program that is open to all dogs – no registry recognition or proof of spay or neuter required. Our goal is not to undermine other registries (a few of which we are qualified test evaluators), but to support and enhance the good health and disposition of all dogs. Our entire purpose at For Love of Dog is helping every dog become the best version of itself, and that means physical fitness and agreeable disposition. That is the crossroad between breeding and obedience training.

RELIABLE COMPANION: The first test in our series is the Reliable Companion test. Most dogs should have completed at least intermediate level training and/or be 1 year of age or over. This will test your dog’s ability to perform basic obedience skills in a diverse setting with little-to-no reactivity. Dogs that pass this test are, indeed, reliable companions and have the aptitude to excel.

PUBLIC ACCESS: The Public Access test is for a more disciplined dog, at least 1 year of age and who has likely completed advanced training. The dog will be tested in a more distracting setting with multiple people and other dogs, and be required to complete a set of tasks calmly and without reactivity. Dogs that pass this test are well-behaved and generally welcome wherever you go.

CHAMPION DISPOSITION: The Champion Disposition test is the most challenging of all. High level distractions are presented to your dog – sounds, sights, smells, humans, textures, and other dogs. Dogs who pass this test are even-tempered and well-balanced, and typically the most trustworthy companions. Passing this test is a testament to your consistent hard work and strong relationship with your dog.
