This Boxer. What a true “dude!” Boomer Twinkle Toes Sinclair joined our family close to 5 years ago, and what a ride it’s been. He’s aloof, snooty, fiercely independent, and then WHAM! A lap full of love. He’s a daddy’s boy through and through, despite being “my dog.” Daddy gets the kisses. I get to play chase and teach. He is 100% Boxer, right down to the clownish tongue hanging out and drippy, droopy lips.
All that said, this clown has matured so much over the past 18 months. I should have CGCA tested him sooner but I got a little sidetracked. By the time we tested last weekend, this stud ROCKED IT. He sauntered into that ring like nobody’s business and owned that test. My sometimes “dog-reactive” Boxer didn’t give a rat’s patooty about the other people, dogs, or smells in that place. He rubber-necked a bit to check on his sister, but otherwise proved to be the ultimate display of public manners and decorum.
I could not be more proud of this boy. Boomer worked hard as a young dog to learn his commands, and we worked consistently over time to perfect them. His first 2-1/2 years were pretty full of obedience training, and the last 2 have been full of daily living. For a dog that hasn’t been in formal canine obedience training for 2(ish) years, he was a pristine model of canine obedience today.
We continue to work every day at home, reinforcing the basics, learning new tricks and movements along the way, and that learning will continue throughout his life. Boomer’s formal dog obedience classes provided a foundation for success. The ongoing, informal training and proofing that occurs every day cements those behaviors into default mode. This guy is proofed so well … something I wasn’t sure he’d achieve.
