Saturday was a Doggie Play Date for my crew. We headed to the local canine sport center for Trick Dog, CGC, and CGCA obedience and sport testing. Boomer earned his CGCA (Canine Good Citizen Advanced) obedience title and Trick Novice “sport” title (I say that tongue in cheek, as the novice level is, by all accounts, easey-peasey) with flying colors. Trixie easily earned her Trick Novice. We live to fight another day to earn the CGC (Canine Good Citizen obedience title) … when Trixie Jo is in the mood to “down.” Seriously, folks! She looked right through me as if to say, “I know what you want, Mom. I see you in my face. I hear you loud and clear. I ain’t doin’ it!”
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: There is no perfect dog. Trixie full well knows how to down, she just didn’t want to do it. Granted, she’s not quite a year and the CGC, while open to dogs over 6 months, is probably best earned after a year of age. She’s got some maturing to do, but every opportunity to practice in a canine center full of smells and people and dogs … oh my! What great experience!
Win, lose, or draw, take every opportunity to get your dog exposure and experience. This stuff is invaluable and this is how you proof a dog’s obedience, behavior, and overall disposition. I’ll fail forward every chance I get. She’ll get there when’s she’s ready, and I’ll be there, cheering the loudest.
