Obedience Through Relationship – True Dog Obedience and Skill Proofing

You will hear me talk about obedience through relationship over and over again. I understand the need for an obedient dog. We all want a dog that doesn’t eat the couch, pee on the floor, and trample the guests – all of which are important behaviors to master.

Keep in mind the purpose of obedience training. It’s not to create Stepford dogs. It most certainly is not about breaking a dog’s spirit to gain compliance. Canine obedience is about shaping the mindset. It’s about creating a positive environment and an enticing reason for the dog to choose you over external stimuli, or to choose a positive behavior (sitting in place) over a negative behavior (jumping on your guest). Obedience training is a process. It takes time and commitment, and is never 100% “done.”

The one thing I want our clients to understand, above and beyond all else, is that the experience matters. This journey with your dog will create a bond and set the tone of your relationship for years to come. Yes, you need to be the leader and provide structure, but you need to do so in a way that is fun and engaging for your dog. Don’t worry so much about the result. Don’t measure your progress against other dogs. Define your goals, work consistently with your dog, and trust the process. But don’t forget to have fun along the way!
